Land a $300,000 job at Google with this resume
Rahul Soni, an engineer and recruiter, shares resume tips that will help you stand out from the other 100,000 applicants. Here's how to get noticed — fast.
When Rahul screened resumes, one thing was clear: short, focused resumes were a win. Keeping it to a page ensures that recruiters can get a snapshot of your qualifications – quick. Extra fluff? Cut it out. Highlight only what’s relevant to the job you’re targeting.A straightforward layout is best. While a colorful design might look nice, it’s not always professional. Rahul advises against decorative templates and recommends a single-column format for clarity. A basic font and simple structure can work wonders, allowing the recruiter to scroll through and find key details. Divide your resume into clear sections: Experience, Skills, Projects, Education, and Awards/Certifications. Each section should be distinct and easy to find. This helps recruiters pinpoint what they’re looking for. Avoid lenghty paragraphs. Pro tip: Make major qualifications (like your degree or field) stand out in section headlines rather than hiding them in blocks of text. Personally, I’d make them bold.
Tailor your resume for each role. Rahul noticed many resumes included irrelevant skills or experiences. If you’re applying for a backend role, highlighting unrelated front-end or design work won’t add value. Customize your resume for the job — less is more when every point aligns with the role.A photo isn’t a dealbreaker, but it’s not necessary either. Rahul notes that it’s fine to add a professional headshot, but only if it doesn’t hog valuable space. Focus on content that will help you get an interview, rather than aesthetics.
Rahul’s resume insights boil down to one thing: make it recruiter-friendly. Put yourself in their shoes and craft the best resume possible.

Studying on your own is effective for some. Shailee chose a bootcamp for its structure and practical experience. Bootcamps like Hack Reactor offer intense, project-focused learning. When choosing one, focus on industry reputation, job placement rates, and curriculum quality. Bootcamps start a technical assessment as a barrier to entry. But, you end up with invaluable project experience and a job ready skill set.
To stand out in a crowded field, build real projects. Shailee worked on portfolio sites, Chrome extensions, and even Reddit bots to show her skills. Building personal projects isn’t practice; it shows future employers what you can do. She also focused on data structures and algorithms — essential for technical interviews.
No CS degree? No problem. Shailee’s story proves that with focus and persistence, landing a tech job without a traditional background is more than doable.
