🖥️ The State of the Tech Job Market in 2024

The tech job market is still challenging, with fewer job openings and increased competition. Software development job postings on sites like Indeed have dropped significantly, returning to levels seen during the height of the pandemic. Vacancies are down 70% from their 2022 peak, and the competition for those roles is tougher than ever.

One reason for this shift is the “bubble effect.” After aggressive hiring sprees during the pandemic, companies are now reassessing their growth plans amid changing economic conditions. The era of cheap money, marked by low interest rates, made hiring easier and more affordable. But as borrowing costs rise, many businesses are scaling back, leading to fewer job openings.

Another challenge candidates face is “ghosting.” This refers to when candidates drop out of the hiring process or fail to show up for interviews. The tech sector has one of the highest ghosting rates, with 33% of ghosted candidates citing poor interview experiences and 29% taking other job offers before completing their current hiring process.

However, it’s not all bad news. Networking is still one of the best ways to land a job in tech. In fact, job referrals are five times more effective than other hiring methods. So, if you’re looking for a job in tech, now’s the time to tap into your professional network, improve your interview skills, and be prepared for a competitive market.
