How a highschooler landed 4 tech internships w/ no experience?
Bashir Rishad was 16, with little to no experience. He sifted through hundreds of free courses and programs, building around half a dozen applications. It took a while, but he finally figured out what it took to get internships.
1. It’s a numbers game
Like a lot of things in life, it’s a numbers game. Tech is not like other industries. All that matters is if you’re willing to learn, and if you're willing to put the effort in to learn fast. Apply to anything as long as it's half relevant to your skill set. You have nothing to lose.
2. Connections, connections, connections
Prioritize connecting any industry connection and ask if they know about any positions open in their company.
3. Apply early
I landed my fourth internship by applying early. You can land multiple interviews by being one of the first people to send in your application.
4. Choose your sites carefully
Prioritize startup job boards
5. Don’t be picky
You're pretty early on in your career. Earning isn't the priority. Just get your foot in the door, dude :)
learning > earning
You have to work a lot harder.
Getting internships in this market is tough for new grads and even tougher if you’re in school. I’m sure we all know kids with 4.0s applying to thousands of positions - unpaid and paid - and still waiting back for responses.
At the end of the day, it’s all about perseverance and grit within this soul-sucking market.
